On Sunday 24th of November, I and some of my classmates participated in a beach clean-up organised by HELMEPA (Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association). This was a rewarding and eye-opening experience that combines environmental responsibility with a sense of community.
As we arrived at the beach, the sight of scattered debris and washed-up trash was overwhelming, but it also reinforced the importance of the work ahead. Equipped with gloves, trash bags, and a determination to make a difference, we split up to undertake the task. The rhythmic sound of waves provided a peaceful backdrop as we focused on removing everything from Schinias beach, from plastic bottles and straws to forgotten fishing lines and microplastics. Each piece of litter collected felt like a small victory for the environment.
The experience is not just about picking up trash—it’s also about connection and learning. Working alongside my classmates and volunteers creates a sense of camaraderie, as everyone shares the common goal of protecting the ocean and its ecosystems. Along the way, we engaged in conversations about sustainability, ocean conservation, and the impact of pollution. Seeing first-hand how human activities affect marine life is a powerful reminder of our responsibility to care for the planet.
By the end of the clean-up, looking out over a cleaner beach was incredibly gratifying and satisfying knowing that your efforts had contributed to a healthier environment and inspired a deeper commitment to sustainable living. All of us who participated in this clean up would like to thank HELMEPA for organising such meaningful activities and to renew our rendezvous for the next clean-up with the aim to further improve the environment we are living in.
