Japanese Theatre Tradition

In February the Drama Department, led by Mrs Rogakou, organised for the IB1 Theatre students to take part in a workshop focusing on the Japanese Theatre Tradition of “Noh” theatre. The workshop, which included many other IB schools from around Athens, took place at St Catherine’s British School and was led by an expert in world theatre traditions, Marina Mergou, who specialises in Noh theatre.
During the workshop the students learned about the symbolism behind Noh theatre, the specific stage used in performances, props, actions, including very particular and slow movements, as well as, different hand gestures that represent feelings such as sadness and joy.
In addition the students had the opportunity to perform a piece of Noh theatre through the use of the many performance elements they were taught. The workshop concluded by having all students split into groups and perform a section of the Noh play “Hanjo” by Yukio Mishima, where they could apply all the new and fascinating knowledge they gained throughout the day.
