Goulandris museum, an inspirational, educational trip

On 31st October, within the framework of the Art and Science departments, Year 7 had the unique chance to visit the Goulandris Natural History Museum in Kifissia.

The museum itself is based in a spectacular building and was founded by Angelos and Niki Goulandris in 1965 so as to promote their interest in natural sciences. At the same time, it raised public awareness in order to protect endangered species.

During our visit, we were divided into three groups. My group was chosen to create an observational drawing in the Entomology Department where the collection really swept me off my feet. The truth is, when we were looking at something from close up we tended to observe it more carefully than usual. Needless to say, the shapes, patterns, shadows, colours and contours seen from a closer perspective led to a better drawing result.

As soon as we had finished our task, we stopped abruptly and gazed at the animal collection with wide, unblinking eyes, nudging each other and pointing at the huge variety of wild animals. To the surprise of our teachers, many students drew the animals’ heads in great detail.

If you are really impressed by the world of animals and plants, you should pay a visit to the museum by all means! You will never regret it!
