Gazi industrial museum

On 4th December Year 9 went on a trip to the old gas factory in the centre of Athens which has now been turned into a historical site. Once there, we were guided through the museum and covered its history and how it produced fotaerio (gas), which provided the city’s homes with light, heat and the means to cook for almost 130 years.

Eventually, in 1984, the factory was closed down because the pollution it produced was very unhealthy and, more importantly, another more efficient way was discovered to provide the city with the same services using electricity, rendering the factory obsolete.
